One of the first things we set out to do at the inception of Heart Of My Heart, was to offer Miscarriage Delivery Aids to families, quickly and at no-cost.
Other miscarriage support ministries and organizations such as Heaven’s Gain, sell similar kits, made with good quality supplies. But we don’t get to pick the time and place that we miscarry our children. The time it takes for such a kit to ship, or for a volunteer with Heart Of My Heart to get a delivery aid to a family in need, does not always line up with when a miscarriage occurs at home.
If you find yourself or a loved one in need of supplies to recover a miscarried child’s remains for reverent burial, please don’t panic. Just a few simple items, most of which you may already have at home, will be enough.
A Strainer
A small strainer (like a berry strainer) or new, REUSABLE drip coffee-pot filter (not a paper one – a mesh and plastic filter is what you will need). Reusable coffee-pot filters are typically found in the same place as the coffee pots in stores like Walmart and Target. They are a good size and drain well to use repeatedly during bathroom visits until you miscarry at home.
A calculi strainer like what is used if you have kidney stones also works, and is what we ordinarily put into HOMH miscarriage delivery aids.
A Vessel
A vessel to contain the collected remains, such as an 8, 12 or 16-ounce mason jar and lid. Size needed will depend on how far along the baby was before they perished.
Contact-Lens Solution
There is no need to be fancy about the brand. A cheap generic version will work fine, as a preservative to put in the vessel with the remains. You do not want the remains of your child to not be kept in liquid or they will quickly decompose.
If you do not have access to contact lens solution, then simply place your preborn child’s remains into water in the vessel. Some kind of clean liquid is better than nothing at all.
Regardless of what liquid you use, be sure to place the vessel into the refrigerator until you are ready to bury or pursue cremation.
